Liberal Document with Key Points

This document (pdf 44kb) lays out the mechanism by which the National Party will become part of the Liberal Party. It puts paid to suggestions that this is just an agreement in principal. The mechanisms, right down to when the parties will hold constitution conventions, are laid out.

There is a concern from some Liberal branch members whether the reported National Party members (suposedly 14,000) if they join the Liberal Party (4000 to 5000) and pay the renewal membership fees will in effect outvote the present Liberal Party membership in future conventions and in effect do a reverse takeover of the Liberal Party once the grandfathering term expires.

On the other hand there are reports that the National Party membership include thousands of past members who are no longer current and inactive and are mostly in their retirement stages of life and will not bother to join the Liberal Party and pay membership fees, since they have not made the effort to remain currently paid up members of the National Party.

It will be interesting to find out the results of the meeting tonight between QLD Coalition MP's and the PM to discuss the merger.

That's exactly what the deal was. It will work very well.

The only question is whether the Nats faithfully repeated that deal to their members?
